I took many more than three photos of my day with Cormorant fisherman Lao Huang, but this is one of the three that stuck with me. There's a care in his look, a reassurance that his birds are okay and in their proper place and ready, that suggested to me how he values this work, the tradition of his ancestors. And even if this thirteen-hundred-year-old fishing method is more a tourist attraction than anything else, it is his line to the past, and his care for that history is plain to see.
These birds are called Cormorant, they belong to this friendly 86-year-old fisherman named Lao Huang. Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained cormorants to fish in rivers, but sadly the thirteen-hundred-year-old fishing method, now only survives as a tourist attraction in modern days.
Prints are carefully rolled, and shipped in kraft tube boxes.
