Cormorant Fisherman of Yangshuo I
Shot in Yangshuo, China
These birds are called Cormorant, they belong to this friendly 86-year-old fisherman named Lao Huang. Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained cormorants to fish in rivers, but sadly the thirteen-hundred-year-old fishing method, now only survives as a tourist attraction in modern days.
Every generation has their own adventure to go on, their own thrills to seek, their own lives to live. I’m reminded of the boundless energy and unrivalled depth of the human spirit when I see the gentleness of Lao Huang, this Cormorant fisherman. A tradition unlike any other, living on through modern times, reminds us we have a chance each day to honour the past that brought us to where we are.
